Trying to get the shop truck to roll over

So we finally got around to trying to get the ole bucket to turn over. Popped the hood the other day and got the borrowed carburetor from a buddy to toss on this thing and roll it over. And that’s when my cheap score reared its ugly head. The carb wouldn’t sit on the manifold. Thankfully, that was just from a slight interference with the water nipple coming from the intake. Got the carb down and found there was no fuel filter coming out of it or fuel nipple in my box of parts from the previous owner. Four or five trips to the parts store for fuel line and different screw in filters and I discovered the hole was the same female fitting used for the fuel pump. One more trip to the store for a hard line. I bent it up and got it installed and hooked up the jumper box. Then I installed the ignition coil. No start.

Well, back to the basics. My carburetor-lending friend pointed out that the oil smelt like fuel. Okay, we knew it was probably running way too rich from the 4 barrel the previous owner had tried to adapt to the two barrel manifold. And we could smell fuel coming into the carburetor. I knew the motor had compression, so it had to be spark. As I was cranking the truck over, it was made known to me that the distributor was walking about/hopping around. So we figured it was probably dropped out of time. Well, it was.. but it was also not bolted down properly, so it was bouncing on the camshaft gear. We brought it up to TDC using my pinky in the number one hole since the TDC pointer had not been reinstalled. Sure enough the distributor wasn’t pointing at number 1. It was about 90 degrees off. So I started to pull it out and noticed there weren’t any points present in the distributor.

Great. Off to the parts store again for another fuel line to bend up (I put a small kink in the first one and an electronic ignition. Pulled the distributor and assembled this little guy at my desk before calling it a night. Maybe, we’ll get her to roll over tomorrow. Then we need to restore brakes.
