A four cylinder S10 showed up at the shop with the cylinder head removed and most of the engine disassembled. We tinkered with the idea of fixing it and selling it, since the owner gave up on it when we gave him a quote. I want to put a modern V8 in everything, so we made some jokes about Chevy Luvs with 350s in them. It turns out, our friend (who works with the pickup’s owner) thought it would be cool to buy the truck. Our friend is real tall, and his current pickup interior wasn’t as big as this S10. So we suggested selling his truck to fund the V8 S10 project. And that’s what happened, and here’s what happened after:
So it began. We stabbed a V8 into an S10. And, of course, nothing fit. (check out a silly video of the engine mounting here!) I cut the crossmember to fit the oil pan into the truck. I braced it and welded it shut where I cut the clearance out.
The factory exhaust manifolds didn’t fit either. The driver’s side interfered with the steering shaft, and the passenger side interfered with the HVAC box. So I bought a set of smog legal painted headers and cut them to pieces. I measured what must have been a hundred times and tacked them in place. Removed for finish welding and got them installed. Remember, I’m in California, so this thing’s gotta go through smog. So I remembered to weld the CARB EO # badge back in place. Hopefully, it passes the visual inspection at the Smog Referee.
